The Hawaiian Hawk has a shrill, highpitched call that echoes its Hawaiian name, or ‘Io. This raptor is found only in Hawai‘i and was a symbol of royalty in Hawaiian culture, considered an “‘aumakua” — a family or personal god — which made harming or killing this bird taboo.
