The ilioinguinal nerve stems from the ventral ramus of L1 from the lumbar plexus and arises with the iliohypogastric nerve as a single trunk from the L1 nerve root.
The ilioinguinal nerve pierces the transversus abdominis and internal oblique muscle to enter the inguinal canal. It then travels through the inguinal canal to provide motor and sensory functions:
Motor innervation is provided to the transversus abdominis muscle and the internal oblique abdominal muscle.
Sensory innervation is supplied to the skin of the superomedial thigh and the groin region
In this video we will take a closer look at the ilioinguinal nerve, its course and innervation:
0:07 origin
0:59 course
1:42 ilioinguinal nerve function (motor innervation)
1:55 ilioinguinal nerve function (sensory innervation)
2:19 ilioinguinal neuralgia and nerve block
