The indigenous people of New Zealand, the Māori people still hold on to many of the tikanga (customs) that ancestors used to do in their time. One of these is kapa haka, which has evolved especially over the past 50+ years, starting with the creation of a National Kapa Haka competition, starting in 1972.

Now known as Te Matatini, the Senior Kapa Haka National competition, celebrated it's 50th birthday in 2022. There have been 24 National competitions so far, with the upcoming Te Matatini 2023 coming up in February!
