United Spinal Association was founded in 1946 by paralyzed veterans returning from World War II. Unwilling to live out the remaining parts of their lives in hospitals, they began fighting for improved health care and equal rights for people with disabilities including access to employment, transportation, housing, education, programs and services.
Currently, United Spinal has approximately 10,000 members, both veterans and nonveterans, nationwide.
