#1 Myth in learning Calligraphy!

The #1 myth in learning calligraphy is that you need to have great handwriting! ❌

When I tell people that I am a calligrapher, usually they will respond by saying, “oh you probably have a great handwriting”…”ah I wish I can learn, but my handwriting is terrible”.

I’m here to put that myth to rest! You actually don’t need to have a nice everyday handwriting to write beautiful calligraphy. My normal writing is more upright, hybrid between print + cursive aka scribbles. I also have an interesting pen grip (lateral quadrupod) where my third finger rests on top of the pen and always held it with a death grip

When learning pointed pen calligraphy, I had to change my grip, my paper angle, S L O W down, and it was a whole process of retraining my muscle memory! Even going from cursive to Copperplate to Spencerian is so different and requires learning a new set of rules, guidelines, letterforms.

So even if you have chicken scratch writing like me, don’t let that hold you back. You CAN learn calligraphy! ☺
