Why are people here considered so unfortunate? What do mud cookies taste like? How do people live when gas is THB 200 per liter?

Let's find out!

Description

We're traveling to Haiti, the most unfortunate country in the world. It's so illfated that its former president once said: "It’s the destiny of the people of Haiti to suffer…"

"There's no job here. There's also food shortage. You can't grow stuff here. Gas goes for THB 200 a liter. There's no running water or electricity," said our guide Augusnel.

"How do people here live?" I exclaimed, perplexed.

"It's like a moon life. That's what I think," Augusnel said, laughing.

Many of us heard about Haiti 10 years ago on the news when a massive earthquake hit the country, killing hundreds of thousands of people. To this day, Haiti has never fully recovered, and the reason can be traced back to the origin of the country.

Haiti was the first Black republic and the only country in the world where the people triumphed over their colonizers, France, and won independence.

As a result of the war, Haiti had to pay hefty reparations through taxes and valuable resources like wood. Also, years of France's sugarcane monoculture have left Haiti with depleted soil, unable to support agriculture and food production. This is not to mention the fact that it is frequently hit by earthquakes thanks to its location between two fault lines. To top it off, because of the government instability, gangs have taken over the capital, leading to daily acts of violence.

"Your family and many Haitians have moved to the US and Chile for a better life? Why don't you follow them? You can move, too, right?" I asked him, wondering why he chose to stay when everyone naturally wants a better life and he had been telling me about the difficult life people had here.

"Yes, but that's not my dream. My dream is to become the Minister of Tourism and develop this country. We have beautiful seas, a long history, and ageold culture. Everybody leaves to look for a better life. Why can't we create a better life here?" He said, a smile tugging at his lips as he talked about his goal.

"I want to tell my family, 'Please come back. Our country is developed now. We can have a good life here," he said with a spark of determination in his eyes.

His voice made me believe that things would really get better despite the long path ahead.

“When that day comes, let me know. I want to tell everyone my guide in Haiti is the Minister of Tourism.”

Join me on a trip to Haiti, the most unfortunate country in the world.
