1 Year of Beginner Drumming Progress

Follow
Jack Oliver

After 20 years of playing guitar, I decided to try learning drums for 1 year to see how much I could progress and also, if it's even possible to fit into my 'adult' life.

I don't own a drum kit, but I practised around 5 hours a week, 3 hours on a practice pad and bass drum practice pad at home, and 2 hours on a full kit at a local rehearsal space.

It was all selftaught, but from being in a band (as a guitarist) I feel like I learned a lot from just watching drummers play over the years.

If you're learning drums or thinking of learning, hopefully there will be some song ideas, rudiments, or inspiration you can use in your own journey.

Looking back over the last year, I'm super grateful for this experience and I've really enjoyed learning drumming basics and playing along to my favourite tracks. I feel like I've got the bug now, and I've got so many songs I want to learn that are a bit out of my reach just now.

If anyone has any advice on my technique or ways I can improve on the drums please comment below. I hope that I can inspire even 1 or 2 people to pick up some sticks and get going, it's such a fun journey.

I have a goal next year to learn more Green Day and Blink 182 songs, but at the minute they are way too fast. But I'm sure with more practice I'll get there eventually.
