More than 10 African countries have offered free secondary school education in recent years, but there isn’t much evidence of the effectiveness of these initiatives. Free Secondary Education (FSE) policies have experienced rapid growth in subSaharan Africa, with more than 20 countries abolishing fees for secondary education in the last two decades. FSE policies have allowed more children, especially those from lowerincome backgrounds, to continue their education. Moreover, it has relieved lowincome households from the financial burden of paying school fees, enabling them to divert spending to other basic needs.
