Most of the French phrases in this lesson use the informal "you": Tu. However, there are a few French phrases that are more commonly said in formal/polite situations, like when asking for help. "Can you help me?" is translated as "Pouvezvous m'aider?" "Vous" is the formal "you" in French. Another situation where formal language is often used is retail/service situations. Some examples from the video: "L'addition, s'il vous plaît." ("The bill, please.") "Comment souhaitezvous payer?" ("How would you like to pay?") When speaking to someone older than you, it is best to use formal language, regardless of the situation.
