This video contains:

1) Ambiguous Suits & Hearts: I first discovered and posted the work of mathematician Kokichi Sugihara’s amazing ambiguous object illusions in 2017. Here is one more really nice example of his original work that was sent to me a few months back by my good friend Tim Rowett.

2) Strandbeest Mini

3) Camphor Craft Miniature Self Propelling Toy Sailing Ship

4) Tornado Spheres

5) Borromean Rings in Wood: three closed loops are linked but no two of the three are linked if one is broken the other two will not be connected in any way. Fun math, sold as home décor, found at my local Cost Plus World Market store. More math than physics for this item but there is a bizarre quantum state (Efimov state) where three particles are bound and described by the same math knot theory as these rings.

6) Saturn Blacklight Kinetic Art

7) Spin Bank: a clever spring mechanism launches each coin into rotation along a symmetry axis on to a concave trapping surface. Angular momentum of the spinning quarter keeps it upright even as it bounces upon impact with the platform. Another spin on making saving spare change fun!

8) 100 Carat Diamond Timer: a classic one minute timer glass but filled with 20 grams of tiny diamonds! Another novel creation that just arrived in my thecuriositybox — ideal timing for a New Years day post. Actual diamonds but synthetic from a process called chemical vapor deposition, think less gemstone and more industrial such as those used in diamond tipped saw blades used to cut gemstones. Yellow gold in color due to nitrogen impurities that facilitate the carbon atoms to join into the diamond lattice structure. These tiny crystals seem to be quite elastic and they rebound energetically as they hit glass below.

9) Magnetic Sand Hourglass: ferromagnetic sand collects above a neodymium magnet in the wood base. Each particulate of ferromagnetic iron becomes a temporary dipole magnet in the presence of the magnetic field in the base. The tiny dipoles link up north ends to south ends, creating interesting patterns that reveal the magnetic field lines.

10) Tree Marble Run

11) Wood Rattleback
