A 12 Lead ECG allows the nurse to assess the electrical activity of the heart. After obtaining a 12 Lead EKG the nurse can assess the patient's heart rhythm and rate.

EKG electrodes are placed on the skin, and it is essential the nurse correctly preps the skin before placing the electrodes. For a 12 Lead EKG, you will need: 10 electrodes, alcohol prep (to clean the skin), abrasive tape, and hair trimmers. It is essential that excessive hair is clipped to prevent artifact in the EKG reading.
