Growing up White in Asia (Taiwan)

I met Kayshella through her mom Johanne. Kayshella was born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan in 2006 and went to local school until her first year of high school. As a kid, she mostly spoke Mandarin and only started speaking English around the age of five. In elementary school, she found fitting in easy because of her outgoing personality and the accepting nature of her peers. Her favorite subjects back then were Chinese and history. Kayshella liked learning about traditional Chinese culture and Taiwanese history during martial law. As a foreigner, Kayshella found middle school to be quite challenging. Some of her teachers thought she couldn't understand Chinese. Thus, she transferred schools, and during the pandemic moved in with her boyfriend in the countryside outside of Kaohsiung. Kayshella tested into a local high school, but found the intense schedule to be overbearing, especially after talking to her friends in Canada about what school life was like there. So after discussing moving in with her grandparents, Kayshella went to Canada to finish up high school at the beginning of the year. When she got there, Kayshella told herself that she was in a Netflix movie, and anything was possible. Even though she's seen her teachers covered in tattoos, classmates kissing in the halls, and girls smoking we*d in the bathroom, Kayshella has tried to keep an open mind. Her best friend in Canada is from China. They enjoy cooking Chinese food, and taking small trips in her friend's car. Kayshella is leaning towards staying in Canada, but might come back for college. Currently, she's back in Taiwan working at a hot pot restaurant. In the future, Kayshella plans on studying physiology or criminology and might become a lawyer or substance abuse counselor.
