17.2 Acid-Base Titrations and Titration Curves | General Chemistry

Follow
Chads Prep

Chad provides an introduction to titrations and titration curves. The lesson begins with a description of a Strong Acid / Strong Base titration curve. The terms analyte, titrant, equivalence point, and indicator are all introduced and defined. It is explained how a the titration of a strong acid with a strong base produces water and a neutral salt explaining why the pH is equal to 7 at the equivalence point. An example calculation of the concentration of the analyte from the equivalence point is performed.
Next, a description of a Weak Acid / Strong Base titration is provided including the fact that the pH is greater than 7 at the equivalence point as the products are water and a basic salt. Also described is the halfequivalence point where half the amount of titrant required to reach the equivalence point has been added. At this point the concentration of the conjugate acid is equal to that of the conjugate base. According to the HendersonHasselbalch equation, pH = pKa and pOH = pKb and this point in the titration can be used to quickly approximate the pKa of a weak acid or the pKb of a weak base.
Finally, a description of a Weak Base / Strong Acid titration is provided including the fact that the pH is less than 7 at the equivalence point as the products are water and an acidic salt. Just as in the Weak Acid / Strong Base titration, the halfequivalence point can be used to quickly approximate the pKa of a weak acid or the pKb of a weak base.
