18.5 Side Chain Reactions of Benzenes | Organic Chemistry

Follow
Chads Prep

In this lesson Chad covers several reactions that specifically occur to the side chains attached to benzene rings. The first is side chain oxidation using either chromic acid or potassium permanganate. Chad shows how this results in carboxylic acids at the benzylic carbon, but also shows how the reaction fails to occur when the benzylic carbon is quaternary. He then reviews benzylic bromination using NBS and the subsequent SN2 and E2 reactions that conversion to an alkyl halide make possible. Chad then covers both the Clemmensen reduction and the WolffKishner reduction which completely deoxygenate ketones and aldehydes to alkanes. Finally Chad show how to reduce a nitro group to an amine either generally through catalytic hydrogenation or specifically using either Fe, Sn, or Zn with acid.
