When this TRX250 started up, I popped it into gear and the rear axle immediately locked up tight. I had already loosened up the brake cables to roll into position for the engine work. After troubleshooting, I was realized that there were no brake shoe, shoe spring, or drum issues and the repair was fairly simple. Turns out, the hand brake cable was rusty and seized. The cable was just tight enough that the rear axle would loosen up when spun backwards and lock up when driven forward. The bad hand brake cable was removed, the whole linkage was oiled, the foot brake cable was serviced and ultimately, the rear axle and rear foot brake seem to be fully functional,
