In 1990, the newspaper headlines read "Mayhem in Meham". Till date, the Meham bypoll remains one of the bloodiest in India’s history. It impacted politics in Haryana and at the national level.

It was the first instance when election violence and booth capturing were recorded on video footage.

It led to the resignation of the then Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala.

Rahul Shrivastava was among the only journalists there. He and his camera team were beaten by the police. They sustained serious head injuries and their equipment was destroyed. But they managed to bring back the footage to Delhi. That footage became the incriminating evidence.
