In this video I show you how I changed the oil and filter on our 2017 Toyota Rav4.

Some people think I forgot to lubricate the Orings. I did not forget it, I just forgot to record that part so I included that towards the end of the video. Oiling the Orings will make it easier to remove the oil filter because it prevents the rubber from sticking to metal surfaces. It's not a big deal if you forget to do it, just do it next time.

How often do I change my oil? I use Mobil1 synthetic oil and change it every 6 months or 6k miles, whichever comes first.

Oil Type 020
Oil Capacity with filter change 4.6 quarts
Oil Drain plug torque specs 30 ftlbs
Oil Filter Housing torque specs 19 ftlbs
Oil filter housing drain plug torque specs 9 ftlbs

If your engine is cold, run your engine for 5 mins before draining the oil. The oil drains faster when the engine is warm.

If your filter housing spins when you are removing the filter housing drain bolt, tighten the filter housing more and try again. It still happens to me even when following the torque specs. I now torque the filter housing to 20 ftlbs, we'll see if that works better.

When you check your oil, check it when the engine is warmed up. If its cold, run the engine for about 510 minutes. After you turn off your engine, Toyota says to wait 5 minutes before checking your oil level.

It is not recommended to reuse the oil drain plug washer. IF you need to, only do this once.

Dispose of your oil by putting it in containers and taking it to your local AutoZone or your nearest oil recycling center. AutoZone will dump the oil and give you back your containers.
