Welcome back to RBR! Today we’re looking at a car that represents a major shift for RollsRoyce to the format they think is perfect to the brand — the fully electric Spectre. In this review, we’ll examine the #Spectre in detail, from its design to its driving performance, and explore how it fits into #RollsRoyce's rich history of internal combustion engine (ICE) excellence. We’ll also dig into the big question: Can an #electric RollsRoyce really be considered the "best car in the world," as its predecessors were?

The Spectre is RollsRoyce’s first allelectric vehicle, but the company is committed to making a full transition to EVs by 2030. This is no side project; it marks a new era. In this video, we’ll explore the history behind RollsRoyce’s transition, from their famous aircraft engines to the smooth V12s that have defined the brand for decades. Can the Spectre carry that legacy forward?

We'll also look closely at the technical details of the Spectre, including its powertrain, suspension, and allnew architecture, which was designed to accommodate both ICE and electric vehicles. After a deep dive into the engineering, I’ll take you through the interior and, of course, take it for a drive to see if it delivers the kind of luxury and refinement we expect from a RollsRoyce.

Charles Rolls made an uncanny prediction in this regard:

“The electric car is perfectly noiseless and clean. There is no smell or vibration. They should become very useful when fixed charging stations can be arranged.”

But interestingly this idea is in line with the later philosophy that formed the basis of any excellent Rolls Royce engine: little to no vibration, and indiscernible smoothness.

Design and Exterior

The 2024 RollsRoyce Spectre stays true to the brand's classic design language while integrating modern updates. The car features the widest grille ever on a RollsRoyce, designed with smoother vanes to improve aerodynamics. The Spirit of Ecstasy mascot, now more aerodynamic, was refined through over 830 hours of windtunnel testing. It’s all part of helping the Spectre achieve a drag coefficient of just 0.25.

The Spectre’s body is made from the largest aluminium panels RollsRoyce has ever used, contributing to an increase in overall structural rigidity by 30%. Despite being nearly 3 tonnes, the Spectre maintains the brand’s signature imposing presence, now sitting on 23inch wheels—the largest RollsRoyce has ever used.

Powertrain and Performance

The Spectre is powered by a 102kWh usable battery and two synchronous motors. The rear motor produces 489bhp, while the front motor adds 259bhp, bringing the total to 584bhp and 900Nm of torque. This allows the car to hit 060mph in 4.4 seconds. RollsRoyce claims a range of 329 miles (WLTP), although colder conditions bring that closer to 260 miles.

Under the skin, the Spectre features a version of RollsRoyce's Planar suspension system. This includes adaptive air suspension, active antiroll bars, and fourwheel steering, all aimed at delivering the smooth, "magic carpet" ride RollsRoyce is known for. The suspension is managed by a decentralised intelligence system that constantly adjusts the car’s dynamics for optimal comfort and performance.

Interior and Technology

Inside, the Spectre has the usual Starlight Roof, but now also brings in Starlight Doors, featuring 4,796 illuminated stars and a Spectre nameplate on the dash using 5,500 stars. But much more impressive to me was how the car is indistinguishable from the ICE versions, with not a single touch point, or material in any nook an cranny, showcasing anything but opulent luxury. The car is also equipped with the SPIRIT digital interface, which I'll show you around.

Driving Experience

Can the Spectre still deliver the renowned RollsRoyce driving experience? Is the "magic carpet" ride intact? Does it provide the silent, effortless luxury that the brand has built its reputation on? And more importantly, is it enough to make you forget about the V12 legacy as the founders seemed to think it could? Let's find out!
