The upcoming Porsche 911 GTS introduces a significant overhaul with the implementation of the new 9A3B6 engine, replacing the previous twinturbocharged 3.0liter 9A2B6 engine found in the 992.1. The new engine has a displacement of 3.6 liters and features an electrically enhanced turbocharger, complemented by a powerful electric motor and generator integrated into the housing of the eightspeed PDK dualclutch transmission. Porsche designates this setup as the THybrid, which stands for Turbo Hybrid, distinguishing it from the company's plugin hybrid electric vehicles, referred to as EHybrids.

Despite the increase in engine size from 3.0 to 3.6 liters and a rise in maximum boost from 18.6 to 26.1 psi, the new engine's power increases by only five horsepower—from 473 to 478. Additionally, peak torque remains unchanged at 420 poundfeet. The primary reason is the use of a perfectly balanced ratio of fuel and air, known as Lambda 1, at all engine operating points. This approach results in higher combustion temperatures, necessitating significantly retarded ignition timing to prevent detonation. The advantage is reduced smog emissions at full power.

The 9A3B6 engine undergoes a substantial redesign to lower its profile and make it less bulky. This redesign creates space for the power control electronics for the hybrid components above the engine. The engine is repackaged with the electrically boosted turbo on the right and the muffler on the left, with the catalytic converter and particulate filter in between.

Notably, the accessory drive is eliminated, with the transmissionmounted motor serving as both the starter and generator. The air conditioning compressor is driven by a 400volt motor via the highvoltage hybrid circuit, and the water pump is now internal and driven by an extension of the oil pumps. These changes reduce the engine's weight by 40 pounds.

The single BorgWarner turbocharger features a 27horsepower electric motor between the compressor and exhaust sides, significantly reducing turbo lag at low revolutions. The electric motor/generator in the eightspeed PDK transmission provides up to 54 horsepower and 110 poundfeet of torque, increasing total power to 533 horsepower and torque to 449 poundfeet.

The hybrid system is powered by a 1.5kWh lithiumion battery operating at 400 volts. Despite efforts to reduce weight, the new GTS coupe's curb weight increases from 3,433 to 3,536 pounds compared to the 992.1 PDK, with a total weight increase of 187 pounds compared to the older manual version.
