The foundation of FIFA was a response to the growing popularity and globalization of football during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As the sport gained widespread popularity across different countries and continents, there was a need for a governing body to standardize rules, organize international competitions, and promote the development of football at all levels.

The International Football Association Board had already been established in 1886 to determine the Laws of the Game, but this organisation was limited to representatives from the football associations of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. The founding members of FIFA therefore consisted of included football associations from Belgium, Denmark, France, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. England joined the following year.

One of FIFA's earliest initiatives was the organization of the first international football tournament, known as the Olympic Football Tournament, which took place during the 1908 Summer Olympics in London. This marked the beginning of FIFA’s involvement in organizing international competitions and promoting the sport on a global stage.

Over the years, FIFA has grown to become the governing body of world football, with membership now comprising 211 national football associations from around the world. Consequently the organization is responsible for major international tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup. However, its global reach has brought with it scrutiny by investigative journalists who have uncovered evidence of corruption, bribery, and voterigging.
