24 Hours Finding Ancient Rock Art In A Remote Arizona Canyon - Part Three

This Video Is Part Three

I had to split this video into three parts since I ended up finding so much incredible ancient rock art from the Anasazi culture (Ancestral Puebloan)!
I decided I needed to spend the night in this remote canyon in the Arizona desert so I could take my time looking at rock art. What makes this canyon or section of canyon so incredible is the dense concentration of rock art left behind by a culture that thrived in this area close to a thousand years ago. The stories these canyons walls could tell. And they do. As I spent the time slowly moving down and investigating both sides of the canyon I began to see different styles of art. One style was abundant pictographs (paintings), another was scratchings that were used to try and erase the pictographs and also created more images, and then a much older style that was rare and almost vanished...obviously the more ancient of the styles. I even discovered a panel of petroglyphs under the cliff base in a section that had recently been exposed from to flooding that had been buried.
Aside from the fact that this canyon had been occupied at times probably dating back much further than a thousand years, try thousands of years, something else began to take shape. Not simply a story of ancient life and the observations of the image makers but a story of conflict. I continually encountered images (I believed) depicting humans holding severed human heads and I even came across a set of images that might even depict animal sacrifice. It is known that this culture entered a dark period before it simply abandoned places such as this canyon. Did these canyon walls document that period? It seems we may never know.
Please join me as I spend 24 hours in this fascinating place discovering what once was...

Visitation to sites such as this should be done with the utmost respect. The artwork is not simply graffiti, it is a window into the past and it is culturally significant. Please take great care when visiting and observing these places.
