35mm movie camera: How to Film | Part 1

Previously, I shot on a Russian 16mm movie camera and that was a breeze. I thought I would be in for the same experience when I decided to buy another Russian camera. This one was a 35mm film movie camera. The learning curve was extremely steep. Hope this video will help guide you if you do get ambitious enough to shoot on 35mm film camera from the 1960s.

The camera I used was a Konvas 1M Russian camera, which is the most affordable camera you will be able to find online.

Other cameras to lookout for are the 2nd generation Konvas 2M, Mitchell 35mm, and Bell Howell 35mm. Also check out the Arriflex Eclair, really beautiful camera. (but pricey)

When acquiring a 35mm camera, here are some questions you need to ask.

1) Has it been tested ? ("Untested" is always a huge red flag)

2) Does it come with a lens and what kind of lens mount does camera have?

3) Does it come with film magazine/s ? How many feet does it hold?

4) How will you power the camera?
a) Manual Hand Crank (included with camera?)
b) Spring Drive (hard to find with Konvas cameras)
c) Power Drive (does it come with cord and battery?)

Now I purchased my camera off of Ebay, but if I had to do it again I would purchase from Olexandr Kalynychenko. Very knowledgeable and will answer any questions you have. Check out his website...
