A potentiometer is a variable resistor that contains 3 pins: ground or negative terminal, power supply or positive terminal, and the output pin whose current in amperes and resistance in ohms are inversely proportional with regards to the given voltage.

In this video, we will demonstrate to you how can a pair of potentiometers not only set the direction but also adjust the speed. We have already explained to you in an earlier video that the 2 pins of a DC motor are interchangeable and your rotational direction would vary: either clockwise or counterclockwise.
