Both the alter ego trust and the joint spousal trusts are forms of an intervivos trust. Intervivos is a Latin term that means "during your lifetime" and these trusts can be considered as, as opposed to testamentary trusts are trusts that are contained inside of your will.
These trusts only take effect after you die, both of these trusts are only available to persons who are over 65 years old in the case of a joint spousal trust.
