Chad explains both conventions for naming complex substituents that are accepted by IUPAC. The systematic approach is explained first and can be used for naming any complex substituent. Chad then presents the common names for the 3 and 4 carbon complex substituents including isopropyl, secbutyl, isobutyl, and tertbutyl groups. Chad finishes the lesson by naming two examples of alkanes that have complex substituents using both the systematic and common names where appropriate.
