Clickbaiters or a dumb Journo would probably headline this something like ‘Are our skies becoming unsafe! Look at these two planes nearly colliding’! And probably somehow relate it back to a door blowing off a 737 ‍♂
But in reality, this is nothing to be concerned about. These two aircraft, a Finnair A321 and Iberia A321 are separated by 2000ft. The regulations clearly state ‘minimum vertical separation for IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) is 1000 ft (300 m) below FL290 (29,000ft) and 2000 ft (600 m) above FL290’.
Both jets (IB3148 and AY1672)were above 29,000ft with the ‘one on top’ being the Finnair jet at 34,000ft. So IFR is clearly being observed.
So next time you look up and see this, it’s merely an optical illusion that they look so close.
