4.6 Cycloalkanes and Cyclohexane Chair Conformations | Organic Chemistry

Chad introduces the conformations of cycloalkanes showing how the size of the ring affects ring strain, which is a combination of angle strain, torsional strain, and steric strain, and then shows the relative stability of cycloalkanes. He then focuses on cyclohexane and introduces the various conformations it can adopt including the chair and boat conformations as well as the twist boat conformations.

Chad then explains how to draw chair conformations of cyclohexane and ring flips, identifying the axial and equatorial positions and the preference by substituents for the equatorial position due to 1,3diaxial interactions. There are two chair conformations, and Chad explains how to draw both and how to determine which is the more stable chair conformation. He further shows how to build a model of cyclohexane and how to perform chair flips with a model kit.

He then reveals how to distinguish between cis and trans isomers of substituted cyclohexanes as well as how to draw the chair conformations of substituted cyclohexanes and how to distinguish which is lower energy (i.e. more stable). He also shows how to draw Newman chair conformations and how these can also facilitate identify cis and trans isomers.
