Gaia Cable Car History

Gaia Cable Car, a project by the Etermar and Telephone consortium, began in March 2009 and came into operation two years later, in April 2011.
With the support of the City Council of Gaia, it is seen not only as an equipment for tourism purposes, but also as a sustainable means of transport, which links the upper deck of the D. Luís Bridge and the City of Wharf Gaia.

Douro River History
The Douro River is an international river that rises in the peaks of the Urbion mountain range, in the province of Soria, in Spain, at an altitude of around 2,080 meters and runs for around 850 km to its mouth, in the city of Porto. It is the third largest river in the Iberian Peninsula, having an extension in Portuguese territory of about 210 km.
Nowadays, it is a very calm river, completely navigable. But in the past, the river Douro was extremely violent. The strong streams, the jutting cliffs, the tight curves, and the high slope of the river made it very dangerous and practically untamable.
The first attempts to unblock the river's navigability began in the mid16th century. However, it was only in 1791, with the elimination of the Cachão da Valeira, that the upper Douro was opened to river navigation.

Monastery of Serra do Pilar History
The Monastery of Serra do Pilar was created after the reform of the Order of Augustinians, when the monks of the monastery of Grijó were transferred to the new location. The construction of this new monastery begins in 1537, which has a plan consisting of the church, circular in plan, the chancel, rectangular in plan, and the cloister, also in circular plan, all arranged sequentially. It is considered one of the most remarkable buildings of classical European architecture due to the circular church and cloister. In 1809, the space of the monastery was occupied by Wellington's troops, when the Portuguese army's attack on the city of Porto, then occupied by Napoleon's troops, was planned. During the 20th century, the monastery was the object of several conservation and restoration work campaigns and is covered by the Historic Center of Porto, inscribed by Unesco on the World Heritage List. The publicity space “Património a Norte” currently works here and is one of the best viewpoints over the Douro River and the historic areas of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia.
