Construction started in 1931 and finished in 1936. It was largest dam in the world when it opened. The Hoover Dam impounds Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States. Hoover Dam provides water and electricity needs to millions of people in Nevada, Arizona, and California. Today, the Hoover is a popular tourist attraction drawing around 7 million people a year. It is located 30 mi (48 km) southeast of Las Vegas and about 45 minute drive from the Las Vegas Strip. As of May 27, Lake Mead water level is 1,053 feet (321 m) above sea level. It dropped to a record low of 1,040 feet in July 2022.
