Welcome aboard the famous IntercityExpress (ICE) from our German colleagues of Deutsche Bahn! We find ourselves in Chur, a mediumsized city in the Swiss Alps. Our trip today will take us to Zurich, with two stops in between, where the train will change its direction of travel and continue further to Basel. From there, DB personnel takes over and will bring the ICE all the way up to Hamburg in northern Germany. It takes 9 hours and 13 minutes from the Alps to the north sea, without leaving the train once! If that ain't convenient, I don't know what is. It is a beautiful autumn day with stunning views onto the alps, most notably the Churfirsten mountain range between Mels and Flums, around the 20:00 minute mark. Later followed by the mystical Lake Walen (Walensee), the alps of Glarus and Lake Zurich. Just 1¼ hours later, we are in the middle of Zurich. Sit back and enjoy the ride! And if sitting for hours in the same seat is too much for you, there is a great restaurant in the train aswell! ;)

The german ICE serves Switzerland for over 25 years. Today, they connect Hamburg with Chur, Kiel with Zürich and Berlin with Interlaken. The handover between SBB and DB is always in Basel SBB, therefore all ICE's in Switzerland are driven by SBB personnel which are trained on the ICE. It's a partnership between both companies and countries, also to be found on the international lines to Austria (Railjet), France (TGV) and Italy (Astoro/Giruno). The ICE 4 reaches a maximum of 265km/h and therefore qualifies as highspeed train. However, the route we are on is limited to 160km/h.

Locomotive/EMU: ICE 4 (BR 412)
