오늘은 서울 성북구 정릉동에 있는 정릉골을 산책했습니다.
이곳 정릉골은 1960년대 초 청계천과 북아현동 일대 판자촌을 정리하면서 산기슭으로 옮겨온 사람들이 형성한 무허가촌입니다. 집이 먼저 지어지고, 사람이 들어온 곳이 아닌, 사람이 들어와 집을 짓고 마을을 만들었습니다. 땅을 고르고 길을 닦아 만든 마을이 아닌 탓에 사람이 정착한 장소를 중심으로 길이 만들어지고, 골목이 생기고, 계단이 만들어졌습니다. 집집마다 담벼락은 있지만 집안 내부가 훤히 들여다보일 정도로 낮습니다. 주요 도시기반시설이 들어오지 못해 사람들은 지금도 연탄을 가져다 난방을 하고, 재래식 화장실을 씁니다. 그래서 정릉골 곳곳에는 타고 남은 흰 연탄재가 쌓여있었습니다. 이 지역 사람들은 정릉골을 ‘70년대에 머물러 있는 마을’이라고 부르기도 합니다.

Today, I took a walk through Jeongneunggol in Jeongneungdong, Seongbukgu, Seoul.
Jeongneunggol is an unauthorized village formed by people who moved to the foot of the mountain in the early 1960s while clearing out the shantytowns around Cheonggyecheon and Bukahyeondong. Houses were built first, and people came in, built houses, and formed villages, rather than a place where people came. Because the village was not built by leveling the land and clearing the roads, roads, alleys, and stairs were built around the places where people settled. Every house has a wall, but it is low enough that the inside of the house is clearly visible. Due to lack of access to major urban infrastructure, people still bring briquettes for heating and use conventional toilets. So, leftover white charcoal ash was piled up all over Jeongneunggol. People in this area also call Jeongneunggol ‘a village stuck in the 70s.’
