I have so much Cass footage from my trip that i will need to upload it in a few different parts, this video being the first. With #6 being such a unique locomotive, i thought it deserved it's own video.

This footage was taken on August 9th and 10th of this year. Western Maryland #6 was built in 1945 and is one of the largest shay locomotives ever built and also holds the distinction of being the last one that was ever built.

Shay locomotives were usually built and operated for logging railroads, but this one was built for WM to work the steep Chaffee Branch from Chaffee WV to Vindex, WV, She spent 5 years hauling coal rather than logs, but her great power was needed for the steep grades on the railroad. Big 6 spent many years at the B&O RR museum in Baltimore, MD before being acquired by the Cass Scenic in 1980. Today, #6 is the largest operating shay locomotive.
