Closed chain exercises are performed whenever the distal aspect of the joint being worked is fixed e.g. the Pushup is a closed chain exercise that work the shoulders.
Open chain exercises whenever the distal aspect of the joint being worked is moving e.g. the Bench press is an open chain exercise that works the shoulders.
Generally speaking:
a) Closed chain exercises work a greater number of muscles e.g. the core is critical to performing a quality Pushup but not so much for the Bench press. This increases neuromuscular complexity because your brain now has to coordinate the actions of a greater number of muscles.
b) Because open chain exercises work fewer muscles, they're better at isolating and activating said muscles.
That's why in my system of restoring function and improving mobility I program open chain exercises earlier and closed chain exercises later open chain exercises.
Today, I'm going to introduce you to some interesting closed chain exercises that will work muscles in ways you've likely never worked them before.

08:20 Tripod Reach (Total Shoulder Mobility I)
11:55 Adductor Side Bridge
16:20 Rotational Wall Press
19:50 Sprint Start Lunge (Knee Flexion RSR)
