5 Divorce Hacks for Saving Time and Money:

If you think you will be getting divorced – or even if you know for sure that you will getting divorced – here are 5 proven ways to make the process go smoothly and efficiently:

1. CHOOSE YOUR METHOD – MEDIATION OR LITIGATION
If you think you can mediate, you absolutely should. It your case does not involve domestic violence or hiding assets, this is your best option.

A good mediator will ensure you have not missed any matters that need to be addressed.
A good mediator will make neither party is bullied into settlement.
A good mediator will let you know what the legal and financial implications are for various settlement options.

2. THINK ABOUT BEST CUSTODY SCHEDULE FOR YOUR KIDS
View this from your child’s perspective.
Think about how various custody schedules will impact your child over time.
Design a custody schedule that (a) help grow and maintain your child’s bond with both parents, and (b) to provide opportunities for role modeling (how a parent navigates through the world). That is what parenting is. That is how children learn and how they become who they are. What is enough time for this? This is what you need to advocate for.

3. UNDERSTAND FAMILY CASH FLOW
If you already manage the money, this is easy. Just have the numbers ready when you sit down to settle.
If you have no idea the ins and outs of the family money, try and get a handle on this before you sit down the settle your case.
If your spouse is uncooperative, get a lawyer. Keeping you in the dark about the family money is a creepy form of control that needs to end.

4. CREATE A NET WORTH STATEMENT
Do you best to list out all of your family’s assets and debts.
If you don’t know what you have, ask your spouse to share all of that information with you. If he or she refuses, get a lawyer. This should not be an issue in a normal situation.

5. BE READY TO SETTLE
If you need to gather yourself emotionally before you start talking money and custody, then do so. Get a therapist. Talk with a smart, rational friend.
If your spouse is gunning for a divorce and you are not, you will have no choice but to settle or litigate. They probably won’t wait for you to be ready.
You can do this.
