How can I manage hip arthritis with physiotherapy?

You might be avoiding exercise because of your hip pain but actually exercise such as strengthening and mobilising your hip may reduce your symptoms. Pain around your hip might weaken your muscles so strengthening them is a really good idea. Also, your hip might become stiff from lack of movement so you should stretch as well.

Why does physiotherapy improve hip arthritis pain?

By doing exercises, you'll restore the natural balance of your hip muscles making the hip work as it's supposed to. It may seem counterintuitive because you've got discomfort from hip arthritis but in time, exercises which strengthen and mobilise your hip will make you feel more comfortable. This will also preserve the life of your hip joint.

Why should I do hip exercises before getting hip replacement surgery?

If you've got hip arthritis you may eventually need a hip replacement. Hip exercises not only prolong the life of your hip joint and ease the pain in the run up to surgery but they also give you a solid foundation for the best possible start to your recovery after you’ve had hip replacement surgery.

How long will hip exercises take to improve my hip arthritis pains?

These exercises should take a fair few weeks for you to feel the benefits, so stick with them. If they increase pain, then ease off and do these movements more gently. You most definitely want to avoid highimpact sports with arthritis.

When should you speak to a physiotherapist about your hip pain?

It depends how bad your pain is. Gentle exercise can be enough to see a big difference in mild pain. However, if the pain in your hip is worsening, if it's affecting your sleep, if you are using increasing amounts of painkillers that aren't working, if it’s all getting worse, then definitely see someone.

What exercises are recommended?
1. Bridging
2. Clam Shells
3. Hip Abduction
4. Sit to Stand
5. Lateral Step Down
