Since my first concert upload on the “channel revival tour” got some great responses from a variety of people, I will continue on my upload quest to get all of these shows uploaded for everybody to listen to. This is the earliest circulating show from Queen’s first UK Tour, and it’s a hot one! Despite being only 30 minutes long (this recording misses a large chunk of “Liar” and everything after it), the recording is reasonably good sounding (despite being distant) and is a great document of early Queen. This is a highly recommended listen to anybody that is a fan of Queen during their early live eras. These early live shows really show how hungry the band was at the time, and hearing the band this raw is a treat in itself.

Despite being incomplete, this recording captures Queen having a brilliant night at the office. On this first tour of the UK, Queen were the support act for Mott The Hoople and they surely stepped up their game live. Recordings of this tour are scare, but a number of fan stories have circulated saying that Queen blew Mott The Hoople off of the stage throughout the tour. I wish more recordings circulated, but I’ll take what I can get. The band sound incredibly brilliant and inspired at this show which is a staple of these early Queen shows. Freddie is also in excellent voice overall singing with confidence (especially as the show progresses) and sounding consistent throughout the recording. Now, it’s time to talk about these performances!

“Father To Son” has an amusing moment early on where Freddie’s microphone is turned all the way down (due to something going on during “Procession” which will be mentioned in a note). After Freddie is made audible, he sings an amazing version of the song (along with excellent falsetto towards the end) and the band compliment him well with some fantastic playing. “Son And Daughter” has a confident Freddie on display, clean vocal harmonies, and a fantastic Brian May solo. “Ogre Battle” is one of the most spirited renditions of the song live as the tempo is cranked up compared to the London 1973 version along with Freddie singing fantastically with most of the intonation issues that were on the previously mentioned version being resolved. Roger’s drumming is also a highlight with him drumming up a storm and adding to the top tier performance. The nonalbum track “Hangman” from this show is the earliest circulating version and it’s a great one with Freddie sounding inspired and the musicianship sounding great. As great as this version is, future live versions would have even stronger performances from everybody on stage. “Keep Yourself Alive” has Freddie flubbing the lyrics in the first verse and singing more conservatively compared to other versions from the era. The rest of the band members are in excellent form with Roger especially sounding enthusiastic. Finally, what we have of “Liar” sounds great with a ton of energy coming through the performance.

ENJOY!!!

Note: There are (possibly) technical difficulties on stage during “Procession” as Freddie shouts: “Wankers!” In case he shouted anything else, the front of house guy turns his mic down but forgets to turn him back up for “Father To Son!” After several seconds, Freddie’s mic is restored to normal volume.
