Ceci Saia

For 6 days I toured the Costa Verde of Spain from Santiago de Compostela to Bilbao aboard a luxurious vintage train: Renfe's transCantabrian Costa Verde Express.
With my own room, topnotch meals, and visiting lovely places as we moved through my favorite region of Spain. [press trip]

We begin the journey in Santiago de Compostela, at the Parador Hostal Reyes Católicos: an old hospital converted into a luxury hotel, right in the Plaza de la Catedral de Santiago.

All train travelers meet in a room of the hostel to checkin.

After leaving our luggage, they gave us a guided tour of the Parador and the historic center of the city, and we had lunch of the highest level before getting on an airconditioned bus that would take us to the train, in the city of Ferrol.

The interior of each car is covered in wood, with period decoration. Before going to our rooms while the crew took our bags to each traveler's suite we made a welcome toast in the dining cars (there are two in total). There is also a reading or recreation carroom, and a barcar for different entertainment activities at night.

Finally, it was time to meet my suite, something I had been fantasizing about since I knew I was going to make this journey. I walked through the narrow corridors of the train until I reached mine number 21 and upon entering I was filled with enormous happiness.

A double bed occupied most of the room, with the headboard on a wall, and the feet facing the window through which in a few minutes he would begin to see the most beautiful views of the Costa Verde. A small table hid a minibar underneath, and the storage space was cleverly arranged: under the bed for suitcases, above it some shelves to leave personal items, a small closet to hang clothes and even a cupboard on the side wall of the bed that I didn't even get to use because I hadn't packed that many things.

Although the most surprising thing was the complete bathroom, complete with a Scottish shower, a mirror with lights and more storage space, and of course a perfectly functional toilet.

When I entered the room for the first time, my suitcase was waiting for me, stored under the bed, and on it was a super comfortable robe, slippers (slippers) to be in the room, and a bag with all the personal hygiene items that I could need. Only conditioner was missing, a fact for travelers with long hair.

After a while the railway started up and the beautiful views of the sea, mountains and cliffs began to appear before my eyes, while I admired them from my bed!

At night we had our first dinner on board, in the dining car that was now “dressed” for dinner, while the landscapes followed one another through the window.

An interesting fact is that we have never slept with the train in motion: to spend the night it always parked at a station.

During the next four days I lived as if I were on a cruise ship on rails: breakfast always on the train, then going on different excursions, having lunch either in Paradores or in firstclass restaurants such as El Corral del Indianu (with a Michelin star), free time on the train or touring a city, and dinner on board with some entertainment afterwards.

With the ally bus we made tourism in places like Gijón, Áviles, Luarca, Oviedo, the Picos de Europa, the Sanctuary of Covadonga, the Altamira neocave, the Playa de las Catedrales, Santander and Bilbao, our final station.
