Jay Soule, of Chippewa of the Thames First Nation, is a multifaceted Torontobased artist also known as Chippewar. Jay is a successful painter, clothing designer, multimedia artist and entrepreneur. Jay is a survivor of the 60’s Scoop, a series of policies that were enacted by provincial child welfare authorities which oversaw thousands of Indigenous children taken from their homes, families, and communities. Jay and his two siblings were taken from his mom and adopted into a white family, which deeply influenced his life and work. Finding community and reconnecting with his ancestral roots is where Jay found himself again. Jay does workshops and educational work, but in everything he does, Jay educates his onlookers. How will his new installation Built on Genocide challenge the way we understand Canada’s colonial history?
