8.9 Oxidative Cleavage of Alkenes | Ozonolysis Permanganate Cleavage of Alkenes | Organic Chemistry

Chads Prep

Chad presents the two common ways we carry out oxidative cleavage of alkenes: ozonolysis and permanganate cleavage. He provides a simple method for predicting products and shows the difference between ozonolysis with oxidizing vs reducing conditions. Chad shows that the products of ozonolysis under reducing conditions are ketones and/or aldehydes in which dimethylsulfide (DMS) or zinc and water are used.

He then shows that the products of ozonolysis under oxidizing conditions are ketones and/or carboxylic acids in which hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is used. Finally, Chad concludes the lesson by showing how permanganate cleavage with hot, concentrated potassium permanganate (KMnO4) yields the same result as ozonolysis under oxidizing conditions.
