코끼리는 수많은 이야기를 담고 있는 동물입니다.
동요와 동물 다큐의 단골 손님이며
뭇 어린이들의 감탄을 자아내는 동물이자,
현존하는 육상 동물 중 가장 큰 녀석이기도 하며,
또, 인간과 그 역사를 함께 한 동시에
인간의 탐욕에 희생된 동물의 대표 명사이기도 하죠.
이렇듯 코끼리는 수많은 희로애락을 품은 동물인데요.
사실, 이들에 얽힌 이야기 중
정말 재미있지만 많이 알려지지 않은 건
바로 진화 이야기가 아닐까 싶습니다.

도대체 코끼리는 어떤 동물로부터 기원했고,
장구한 진화의 과정 속에서 얼마나 다양해졌으며,
또, 지금에 이르러서는 왜 이토록 거대해지고,
코가 길어진 걸까요?
오늘은 우리의 동심에만 머물던
코끼리의 진화에 대한 이야기입니다.
