Excel is a great option for keeping track of your checkbook register. The newest version has improved formulas that make it faster for larger spreadsheets and also more compatible with older versions of Excel.

This spreadsheet improves upon others I have seen by making it possible to enter future expenses for forecasting purposes without getting "REF" errors due to moving (cut/paste) your entries around later. It also includes a validation list for categories and pie charts to visualize expenses as well as a sheet to track progress on reducing credit card debt.
