Take a rare peek into a bird mill with 500+ parrots breeding for the pet trade. The Timneh African Grey in the pictures, as we were told, was somebody's "pet" at one time. This particular Grey was surrendered to the bird mill because the guardians could not keep the bird anymore and the breeders promised their bird an excellent life. As it turns out, their bird was placed into a community cage of other Greys in order to pair the bird up to become another one of their breeder birds. The result was this bird being attacked terribly by other birds in the hostile environment. The Grey suffered a bad eye injury you can see the eye sticking out about a half inch and crusted over. The bird also ripped all of its feathers out of its body due to the highly stressful situation. While this particular bird mill went out of business earlier in 2007, it is important to note that bird mills such as this one are in operation all over the Country and are doing so without regulation. Send a message to the pet trade that you will not support such barbaric practices by supporting bird adoption with your local shelter, club or rescue.
