Life on the Civil War Research Trail

Little Round Top is remembered as one of the most critical actions during the Battle of Gettysburg. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain's telling of the 20th Maine's defense is the stuff of legend. Among the Confederates on the opposite side who told their version of the story was Brig. Gen. Evander M. Law, who commanded a brigade of Alabamians and assumed leadership of Maj. John B. Hood's division after Hood suffered a wound. Law shared his objections to the attack, offered an alternative, and criticized Lee. Here's his point of view.
