A Crabby Time- Ilwaco Cannery Fire and Crab Season 2024 ep.31

Follow
Wild On The Water

We end our tuna season by heading to Ilwaco, Washington to start on crab pot gear work for the 2024 Dungeness crab season. We run into over two months of delays, due to the crab molting. They have to fill their shells with meat after the molt to grow into their new shells. This was compounded by watching from beginning to end, a small cannery in the town of Ilwaco burning to the ground, or in this case, water. It was covered my multiple news outlets and we actually helped to provide drone footage of the aftermath of the fire. It devastated fishermen and burned up over 8000 crab pots that were waiting to go in the water for the biggest Dungeness crab fishery in the world. The harbor was filled with the charred remains for weeks. But, after our long wait the day finally came, Go time! We got the word, loaded the boat that we dumped our crab pots off of and hit the water. We finally got to start, but next week brings a whole new chapter and some major changes in our life.stay tuned! Next season will be a much more in depth view of how crab fishing works!
