Synopsis . (00:08) Charlot enters a nickelodeon and immediately falls in love with the Keystone Girl (Peggy Pearce) who appears among the audience in the theater (01:38). When the onscreen actress is kissed by another man (George Nichols), the Tramp throws a fit and is thrown out of the theater
He then decides to go to the Keystone studios (02:28) to meet the beautiful actress. Here he witnesses the arrival of Keystone actors including Fatty Arbuckle (03:10) and Ford Sterling (03:31). After an initial failed attempt, Charlie manages to sneak into the studios (04:37) where preparations are being made to shoot a scene. The intruder, unaware of what is going on around, begins to get in the way of the workers until he runs into the beautiful girl seen on the screen (05:36), then sits back and observes. When the character played by the girl is attacked by a thug (07:04), the Tramp, unable to distinguish between reality and stage fiction, jumps to her aid by interrupting the filming. After causing further and worse damage, the tramp is finally forced to leave the set.
(08:26) A fire has broken out near the studios, as a burning building is just the perfect setting for the last scene, the whole crew rushes to the scene to take advantage of it. But nearby also lurks the Tramp, who again bursts onto the set (09:33) to rescue his beauty and again generating chaos and mayhem. (10:45) The arrival of the fire department will not improve the situation.

Chaplin did not hold the director George Nichols in high esteem, whom he thought was uncreative, hurried, and stuck to clichés, and who demanded nothing more from him than a replication of Ford Sterling. In spite of their mutual dislike, Chaplin managed to include in this film some more creative and personal contributions of his own such as the extraordinary gun sequence (07:24) that he improvised on the spot.
