A is for Arab: A Century of Stereotypes
October 2, 2013
The husbandandwife Shaheen duo have spent more than four decades documenting Arab and Muslim stereotypes in US popular culture from the early 20th century to the present, and recently donated more than 3,000 items, including motion pictures, television programs, editorial cartoons, and comic books, to create the Shaheen Archive at NYU's Tamiment Library. This talk discusses the research process as it relates to the resulting publications and the Shaheen Archive and examines Hollywood's Arab and Muslim images: what they are, their impact on opinion and policies, why they exist, and how best to address them in the future.
