A Magnificent Twin Beech roars to life at Morris Municipal Airport

Flying Bob Allen

A retired American Airlines pilot shows off his replacement for a B787. The twin Beechcraft inspired aviation dreams in the 1950s. First built in 1937, the D18 was later commonly powered by 450horse powered Pratt and Whitney R985s. Over 9,000 were built. In World War II, the Twin Beech was used to train bombardiers and navigators for the US Army Air Corps.
After the war, surplus Model 18s made their way into hands of civilians. The last Twin Beech was built in 1970.
Wikipedia states that only 240 existed flying in the FAA aircraft registry as of five years ago.
This lovely model currently calls Morris home. Rumor has it that the owner just brought it here on Friday. The story is that he owns a grass strip, but wants to get more familiar with his new bird before landing on his home sod.
Congratulations on your new steed!
