Helen Rossi is determined to find a mate for her son Tom, a confirmed bachelor and divorce lawyer who plans to avoid matrimony altogether. While undergoing tests at clinic, Helen spots a nurse, Jane, who she feels would be the perfect wife for Tom. She persuades them to go on a blind date against the advice of her housekeeper/confidante, Katie, and her circle of cardplaying friends. The date is a disaster and matters are made worse when Tom keeps running into attractive women that seem to know him intimately. Helen is driven to see the two married some day and pursues this goal even after finding out that her medical tests indicate she does not have long to live.
