In this video, we go through a powerful ancient Buddhist wisdom short story that teaches us about why we should be careful about who we trust, and also the importance of being accountable and taking responsibility for our lives. Watch the full video to discover the moral lesson.

Story:
Many generations ago a crane lived near a pond, and when the dry season set in, he went over to the fishes and tried to instill fear and anxiety among them by questioning their future. Then, acting as if he were a friend, the crane suggested a solution by offering to carry all of them to a large lake nearby where they would have enough water & food. The fishes fell into his trap and agreed. And as he had planned, he carried all of the fishes, one at a time, to a big Varanatree and ate them.

There also lived a crab in the same pond. When the crane was done eating the fishes, he tried to trick the crab as well. But it didn't work and instead, the crab outwitted the crane. As a result, not only did the crane's trick fail, but he also had to pay for his cunningness with his life.

This story teaches us that we should be really careful with who we trust, whether it's in our friends, family, or our workplace. The relationships that we form in life impact us deeply, with trust being a core aspect of any meaningful relationship. The fishes put their trust in the wrong place and paid a heavy price for it, while the crab was careful with who he trusted and came out of the crane's tricks safe. And thus, if we trust the wrong people, it only brings unnecessary hurt.

Another lesson here is that we must take responsibility for our own lives. Your life is yours to live. If you work for something, you increase the possibility of achieving it. If you don't work and simply pray/wish, there is little hope. Taking accountability of your life allows you to select your own path and put in the efforts necessary. It also allows us to own our failures and improvise accordingly. If something good happens, we seldom give credit to others. Then why blame them when something doesn't go our way? Take responsibility for whatever happens, whether good or bad, and stay in charge of your life.
