The current generation of the Toyota Fortuner continues to utilize the brand's IMV platform, featuring a bodyonframe chassis with a longitudinal engine layout. The base 4x2 trims of this SUV are rearwheel drive, while the toptier variants include a switchable 4x4 system, controlled via a cabin dial. Notably, only the models equipped with 2.8liter engines offer the 4x4 option; the 2.4liter diesel engine variants are strictly rearwheel drive.

The 2.4liter 2GDFTV engine produces 148 hp and 400 Nm of torque, while the 2.8liter 1GDFTV engine delivers an impressive 201 hp and 500 Nm of torque, marking a significant improvement over previous figures. Both engines are inline4 cylinders with 16 valves, dual overhead camshafts, and feature a Variable Nozzle Turbo with an intercooler positioned at the front of the vehicle.

The Fortuner's chassis features a doublewishbone front suspension and a multilink rear suspension, both fully independent for an improved ride quality. Additionally, it is equipped with ventilated disc brakes all around. Wheel sizes vary by trim: the G variants come with 17inch wheels, while the V variants and higher trims are fitted with 18inch wheels. The LTD trim boasts a distinctive set of 18inch machinecut finish wheels.

The Toyota Fortuner offers two distinct exterior configurations. The G, V, and Q variants have an updated yet familiar appearance, featuring new grilles and bumpers at both the front and rear. These models now come standard with Bibeam LED headlamps, which were previously exclusive to the toptier models.

All Fortuner models are equipped with driver, front passenger, and knee airbags. The LTD trim level goes further by including side and curtain shield airbags, bringing the total to seven airbags in the highest trim. The LTD trims also feature Toyota Safety Sense, which includes adaptive cruise control, lane departure alert, and a precollision warning system.

Additional safety features across all Fortuner models include ABS with EBD and brake assist, vehicle stability control, traction control, hillstart assist control, and for the 4x4 LTD, downhill assist control. Other safety provisions consist of 3point seatbelts for all occupants, driver and front passenger seatbelt reminders, child lock doors, Toyota's vehicle security system, an engine immobilizer, a horn, and ISOFIX child seat anchors.
